Goalkeeper Coaching:
The European Approach.

You've coached goalkeepers for years, but your system is still a collection of drills you've accumulated. This course changes that — six live online sessions covering the GK department, microcycle planning, defending the goal, footwork, youth development pathways, and scouting frameworks.

The problem

You Coach Keepers.
You Don't Have a System.

You've got drills saved to Pinterest. You follow GK coaches on social. You've taken notes at every workshop you could get to. You know how to run a session, at least in volume.

But when Monday rolls around and you have to plan the week for your goalkeeper, the reality is different. You know aerial dominance needs work, but you don't know which day it fits in the microcycle. You know distribution matters, but you don't have a clear progression. You know you should assess your keeper, but the form you're using is the same one you wrote five years ago.

You know what you want — but you don't have the methodology to operationalise it every day, in the context you actually coach in.

The problem isn't a lack of knowledge. It's a lack of system. It's the gap between accumulating drills and having a methodology that actually develops a goalkeeper.

Your coaching licence gave you the rules of the game.
This course gives you the system.
The programme

6 Sessions. From Department to Scouting.

Each session is 2 hours live, with structured pre-work and deliverables you take away — templates and decision frameworks you actually use the week after, not slides you forget.

01
Building a GK Department

Roles, hierarchy, and how the GK staff communicates with the rest of the technical team. How a Premier League club structures the department and runs the season as a process — and what's transferable to clubs without the same budget.

Instructor: Tony Caig · Newcastle United
Deliverable: Department template
02
Planning & Methodology

Structure and components of a GK session. Weekly planning and integration into the team's collective microcycle. You leave with a planning model applied to your own context, not someone else's.

Instructor: Michael Dougherty · Coleraine FC
Deliverable: Microcycle model
03
Defending the Goal

Base posture, movement, aerial decision criteria, blocks and 1v1s. How to turn the recurring errors of the keeper you actually coach into specific training drills with deliberate methodology behind them.

Deliverable: Decision checklist
04
Footwork & Build-up

Short, medium and long build-up: criteria, progressions and the most common errors. How to coach the goalkeeper as an extra outfield player inside the team's game model — not as a separate exercise bolted on.

Deliverable: Build-up decision tree
05
Developing the Young Goalkeeper

What to coach at each age band — technical priorities, game understanding and when to specialise, from first academy sessions to the edge of senior football. How an elite academy structures the pathway, and how to apply the same logic with one keeper or a full age-group programme.

Instructor: Mirza Harambasic · Real Salt Lake
Deliverable: Age-phase development framework
06
Scouting & GK Analysis

What the standard scouting forms miss, what's redundant, and what actually informs technical decisions. How to use video to identify behavioural patterns that the live eye doesn't catch. The same level of detail professional departments use.

Instructor: Ricardo Pereira · Norwich City
Deliverable: Observation form

Common questions

Straight Answers.

No. The course is open to any coach with responsibility for goalkeeper development — from the head coach who works with their keeper directly at amateur level, through to the dedicated GK coach in an academy or senior set-up. The language is technical but accessible.

Hybrid. Each 2-hour live session combines theoretical frameworks with real-world use cases drawn from professional environments — analysis, discussion, and tool construction. You leave each session with concepts you can put to work the same week, not just notes.

Yes. Instructors run sessions live and answer questions in real time. With a 20-coach cap per cohort, there's room for actual interaction, not passive chat broadcast.

Recordings stay on the Sportrail platform for 90 days. Watch live where possible — that's where the value is — and catch up in your own time when life gets in the way.

Yes. A certificate is issued by Sportrail — a DGERT and IPDJ certified training body in Portugal — covering 20 hours of CPD content (live sessions plus structured pre-work and deliverables). The certificate lists the competencies developed.

Live sessions run at 9pm CET (Lisbon · Madrid · Paris · Rome). For coaches elsewhere, that converts to roughly 3pm ET / 12pm PT for North America and 6am AEST the following morning for Australia. Every session is recorded — if the live slot doesn't work for your week, you catch up on playback within 90 days.

Payments are processed by Stripe — the same payment processor used by Amazon, Shopify, Google, Lyft and millions of US and Canadian businesses. Stripe is PCI Service Provider Level 1 certified (the highest tier of payment security) and is regulated as a money transmitter across the US and Canada. Your card details never touch Sportrail's servers; they go straight to Stripe, get encrypted and tokenised at the browser, and you get a Stripe-issued receipt.

Nothing is charged at pre-registration — no card is collected today. When your cohort confirms, we email you a Stripe payment link. You pay in USD with whichever card you prefer; the money lands in our Stripe account in Portugal, fully traceable.

About tax: the $277 price is exclusive of local taxes. Depending on your billing location, VAT (EU/UK), sales tax (US) or GST (Canada/Australia) may be added to the total at checkout — calculated and itemised by Stripe Tax on the receipt.

Mostly, yes. Four of the six sessions have confirmed instructors: Tony Caig (Head of Academy Goalkeeping, Newcastle United, UEFA A Goalkeeping Licence), Michael Dougherty (Head of Goalkeeping, Coleraine FC, UEFA A Goalkeeping Licence), Ricardo Pereira (First-Team GK Coach, Norwich City) and Mirza Harambasic (First-Team GK Coach, Real Salt Lake). The remaining two modules are delivered by named instructors from the Sportrail GK network — finalised and shared before kickoff. What we guarantee, in every module: a practitioner currently working at professional club level.

Your keeper deserves more than improvisation. Register today and you'll get the Sportrail GK Observation Sheet (PDF) as an immediate bonus download.
